Biography

Luis Antonio ESPINOSA FRUTOS is a Cuban artist who was born in 1974.

He trained at the National School of Plastic Arts in Havana.

In 1995, he won the « La Joven Estampa » prize in Havana.

In 2004, he won the first prize in the painting competition organized by Nicomedes Garcia Gomez de Segovia, to promote culture.

He has exhibited in Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Spain (ARCO), Santiago de Chile, Switzerland …

In 2007, he participated in the collective exhibition of Cuban artists « Monstruos devoradores de Energia » that took place at the Casa de América in Madrid.

Antonio was raised by the sea. The sea is an essential part of him, something very personal. His paintings and drawings of the sea are a product of ‘landscape as a thought ».

He thinks first of the image he wishes to create and then locates a place with similar characteristics and uses photographs as studies in his art.

The work of Antonio moves in two main lines. One line is dedicated to monochrome landscapes with critical impact on marine issues, and deals with the sea as a real or virtual boundary of his island birthplace being surrounded by sea and isolating its borders. It is an intimate landscape dreamed and recreated by the artist himself from his visions and reconstructions of images that refer to deceptively recognizable site. The other aspect of his work takes place within a social art critique through the analysis of history and its various aspects.
