The organizers of Art Basel chose Paris as the location for their new international contemporary art fair named Paris+ par Art Basel. The event took place at the Grand Palais Éphémère from October 20 to 23, 2022. The event was a great success, offering professionals and the public a chance to discover the work of up-and-coming international emerging artists whose blooming carriers, we feel, are worth following.

Contemporary art fair: Paris+ par Art Basel

The FIAC 2022 will not be held this year in Paris, however a new international contemporary art fair named Paris+ par Art Basel took place in Paris for the very first time. Art Basel was created in 1970 in Basel, a success from the very first exhibition, the show was then held in various locations around the world, including Miami and Hong Kong. This three-day event, which took place at the Grand Palais Éphémère, proved to be a success, attracting more than 40,000 visitors. This was a temporary location, due to the fact that the Grand Palais is being renovated; work is slated to be finished by 2024. Visitors expressed that they had a very vibrant experience, as they absorbed work from leading galleries from 30 countries and various art related events - conferences, exhibitions, stalls and much more.

A very successful contemporary art fair held in Paris

Art Basel’s organizers had one main goal in mind, to create an event dedicated to creating new “connections between contemporary art and French cultural industries such as fashion, music, design and cinema.” Their mission was clearly accomplished as this inaugural edition of Paris+ par Art Basel reunited 156 galleries from around the world, including France various European countries, Africa, Asia, North and South America and the Middle East. The organizers announced numerous successful sales thanks to the active participation of collectors of standing and various international institutions. This event affirmed Paris’ leading position on the contemporary art scene.

Its success was undoubtedly due in part to the organizers’ capacity to collaborate with Paris’ cultural institutions.

Sales with several zeros!

The artists exhibiting also expressed that they thought the event was successful. For example, Patrick Goddard, a 38-year-old British artist whose captivating models of snails invading common living spaces such as homes and train stations, testified: "Paris is regaining its place as the central hub for contemporary and modern art in Europe.”

Among the most notable sales at Paris+ par Art Basel: a painting by Kehinde Wiley sold for 880,000 euros, a Joan Mitchell for more than 4.5 million euros, a Giacometti for 2.7 million euros, a George Condo for 2.6 million euros and a Christopher Wool for 1.5 million euros.

Paris+ par Art Basel: A major contemporary art fair

Paris+ par Art Basel is destined to become a major event in the contemporary art world and has also organized “Art in the Park,” featuring art installations throughout Paris, as well as other open-air exhibitions. For example, the magnificent piece by the German-Polish artist Alicja Kwade, who presented her largest installation to date - Au cours des Mondes - at Place Vendôme and the remarkable exhibition organized in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre featuring large-scale works in the scenic grounds of the Jardin des Tuileries.

Clément Delépine, director of Paris+ par Art Basel, was delighted: "I believe that this week marks a real turning point for the artistic community in France, a point where Paris’ cultural figures have come together to collectively present the best that the city has to offer to the world. The excitement in the exhibition halls and throughout Paris is a testament to the city's newfound momentum and the spirit of collegiality that made this first edition extraordinarily successful."

Make way for talented emerging artists!

An entire section of Paris+ par Art Basel, entitled Galeries Émergentes, was reserved specifically for emerging contemporary artists.

Art market specialists kept an eye on these successful emerging artists. Paris+ par Art Basel curated a small selection of these young talents that they believe are destined to become major artists in the near future.

For example, the director of the Parisian gallery Sans Titre, Marie Madec, presented the 27-year-old Swiss artist of Malagasy descent, Jessy Razafimandimby, who made a successful sale!

The French President Emmanuel Macron and the French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak, made appearances at the event. Louis Vuitton, one of the eminent partners of Paris+ par Art Basel was particularly pleased with these public appearances.
