Period Contemporary (1945-today)

“Aquatic Symphony" is a refined and poetic composition that exudes serenity and connection. In this black and white ink drawing, Hildegarde Handsaeme intertwines ten abstract and stylized faces with the graceful outlines of fish, forming a rhythmic and fluid pattern. Each face expresses a subtle emotion – ranging from introspection to lightness – creating a delicate balance between individual expression and collective harmony.

Clean lines and thoughtful use of negative space create a visual play that evokes both stillness and movement. The bold framing, contrasting with the elegant interior lines, serves as a metaphor for freedom within boundaries. The work invites the viewer to reflect on themes such as connection, vulnerability, and the fluidity of identity.

With “Aquatic Symphony," Handsaeme offers a timeless and universally evocative ode to simplicity and depth, infusing any space with aesthetic sophistication and subtle meaning.

Artist Biography

Born in Kortrijk, Hildegarde Handsaeme attended the Academy of Fine Arts in OVERIJSE but remains above all a self-taught artist. Very quickly, she was able to put her inspiration on stage through a very personal style and technique that only calls upon her own research.

Since 1992, when she really devoted herself to painting, we already discover the characteristics of her compositions which make her known to the Belgian and French public. The beginning of a career that today counts more than twenty exhibitions and a series of awards.
