Lithography

The technique of the lithography is used at the beginning of the XIX°s, it is a printing technique using a stone matrix. The invention of this technique goes back to 1796 by German printer Aloys Senefelder, it was intended for the reproduction of texts and musical scores but not images. The first artistic attempts of lithography go back to the XIX°s.

The lithography is a revolutionary" flat" printing technique because it allows reproduction in several copies of a drawing executed with ink or a special pencil on a limestone, subjected to chemical treatment, so that fats contained in the ink and in the pencil settle definitively on the stone. The principle of lithography is that certain stones absorb the water with extreme ease whereas fat repels water and tends to unite itself to other fat.
