Printmaking is the result of the manual or mechanical pressure on a board or a matrix inked of a paper sheet in great majority and more rarely on other materials as the silk or the pergamène.
There are several types of prints: relief or relief drawing, hollow or line-engraving, in plan (the drawing is on the surface of the matrix as in lithography or in screenprinting).
The relief or hollow prints are engravings. The technique was born in the XV°s, probably in Germany and in Italy, to spread images of religious propaganda and printed texts.
