Artist Biography

Baboute is a painter and visual artist born in Saint-Étienne in 1969. A student at the Saint-Étienne Fine Arts School from 1992 to 1996, he was influenced by Henri Matisse and Claude Viallat.

He lives and works in Saint-Étienne. Trained by Philippe Louisgrand and Philippe Favier, he graduated in 1996. He began working in textiles with his family in the 1980s. In the early days, he used salvaged materials such as parasol tarpaulins to create his works.
In the 1990s, he began to use a motif that appears regularly in his latest series.

Baboute's canvases are intrinsically linked to the image of women, their historical symbolism and their mystery. Through a play of juxtaposition of figure and form, a nameless being emerges to challenge us. Only the figurative reminder of the subject's presence and existence dominates the canvas. The reader is drawn in by a fleeting expression, an outline, a shadow. The face is brought to life by the perception of the other, imbued with features, colors and light. The motif has its own code, identical yet so different. The portraits are fragmented. How do you reconcile a figure and an abstract painting, how do you superimpose visual languages? Such is the challenge facing this artist.
