Juan Adrio (Pontevedra, 1971)
I live and work in Santiago de Compostela.
Doctor of Fine Arts, University of Vigo.
I have been a professor of photography at the Mestre Mateo School of Art and Design in Santiago de Compostela since 2013. Before that, since 2000, I have taught at the Antonio Failde School of Art and Design in Ourense.
In my work, I address questions about the language of photography itself, which intertwine with more general aspects of human existence. I'm interested in the rhetoric of moving away from the fascination with the visual fact. My work is a consequence of this way of understanding photography, focusing on the interstices of the gaze and the technical possibilities of photographic processes and materials to suggest other forms of perception. Sometimes through a treatment of color that makes one doubt whether one is in front of a color or black and white image, other times by playing on the limits between light and shadow or on the minimal aspect of the image. I generally focus my attention on places and moments where it seems that we are facing an unreality, to the point of doubting whether it is a photographic image or another mode of representation.
