Artist Biography

Ielizaveta Portnova is a Ukrainian ceramic artist based in France. What sets Ielizaveta Portnova apart is her unbridled creativity and her fearlessness in exploring new horizons. She pushes the boundaries of traditional ceramic art by delving into various modeling and cooking techniques, often repurposing her earlier works alongside those of other artists to breathe life into fresh, innovative creations.

With nimble fingers, she sculpts her pieces by hand, reveling in the myriad textures that clay offers. Layers of oxides, slips, and glazes add depth and character to her art, while she incorporates both organic and inorganic materials, playing a captivating game of ambiguity with the viewer. Her creations blur the lines between the natural and the artificial, challenging perceptions and sowing seeds of doubt.

The essence of Ielizaveta Portnova's artistry draws inspiration from the organic world. Nature, the sea, and an archaeological imagination weave together to create a distinctive universe that her works inhabit. Her pieces often mirror the texture of stratified or eroded rocks and fossils, exuding an inherent fragility and unpredictability, akin to nature's own handiwork.

Ielizaveta Portnova's artistic odyssey has taken her to various corners of the world. She has actively participated in residencies, including the notable one in Vallauris. Her art has graced numerous exhibitions, from the charming Brussière Badil ceramic market in Dordogne to the distinguished Congress of the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva, and even the illustrious Grand Palais ephemeral in Paris.

Recognition and accolades have flowed her way, affirming the brilliance of her creations. In 2019, she was honored with the Grand Prize of the Opishne International Ceramic Biennale in Ukraine. In 2022, she earned the prestigious Honorary Prize at the international ceramic exhibition "MediTERRAneo" in Italy.

Her art has found enthusiastic audiences in Europe and Asia, captivating viewers with its mystique and allure. She left an indelible mark in the "Blanc de Chine" exhibition at the International Art Award in Beijing in 2019. Her works have been featured in various exhibitions across South Korea, Italy, Spain, and her native Ukraine. Ielizaveta Portnova is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva.
