The marble is a metamorphic rock, of the same chemical composition as the limestone, formed by crystals of calcite or of dolomite, often veined with color and susceptible to nice polish. The exploitation and work of marble goes back to Antiquity and stands out as a major material over time. Of Praxitèle, the most illustrious representative of the attique current in IV ° bc JC, to Gottfried Honegger, iconic figure of a new concrete art, via Michelangelo, Le Bernin, Canova, Brancusi - rare are the artists working with third dimension who did not try it.
Really hard and resistant, marble is much easier to work than certain stones. Consequently, it has very early proved ideal for the representation of movement and fluidity of the human body. Offering at the same time transparency and distinct colorings, it allowed the sculptors to highlight both skins, complexions and delicate folds of fabrics.
