Biography

Jonathan Becerra (artist name: Benny Arte) was born in Caracas (Venezuela) in 1970. He is the son of Milton Becerra, a renowned visual artist. From an early age, his family environment brought him into contact with many artists, including Jesus Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Pancho Quilici. In the 1990s, he studied computer science and became familiar with digital creation techniques. Seduced by the modernity of Vasarely's works and the artist's visionary side, Jonathan Becerra soon discovered that Vasarely was the precursor of digital art - now in full swing - and recognized himself in Vasarely's vision of “art for all” and his desire to integrate art into all areas of life. It was at this point that Benny Arte set up a Lego character named Benny and placed him in environments taken from popular mass culture (music, advertising, media, news), placing him in the tradition of Pop Art, as opposed to the elitist culture of art. The Benny character would become the central, recurring element of the artist's creations, representative of an attitude conveyed by the work rather than the work itself. Benny Arte soon became Jonathan Becerra's artist name.

As the artist's proposals progressed, from the staging of the Benny character to other figures from the world of geekery and video games, a smooth transition took place towards a more intimate universe, linked to Jonathan Becerra's roots and in which Native American figures made their appearance, imbuing the new works with a poignant spirituality. Soon afterwards, a sphere (the “multiple sphere” series) appears, to be set in the four elements. Far from closing the chapter of previous creations, this sphere will serve as the thread for a new adventure involving Benny once again. It's clear that Benny Arte practices digital art with skill and passion, revisiting Pop Art, symbolism, figurative and abstract art in equal measure, supported by his know-how and unceasing digital research.
