Biography

JOREL is a Corsican artist whose works are compulsive, deep and sensual. Since 1987, painting has revealed itself to him : « One morning, I woke up with an irresistible desire to paint ». Self-taught artist, his beginnings in painting oriented him towards the classicism of the Italian Renaissance and the painting of the Flemish School from which he learned a rigorous apprenticeship and it was under the influence of the great portrait painters (Ingres, Rembrandt ... ) that he learned the art of portraiture. In the 1980s, he chose the Impressionist current to treat his native region, abandoning the brush for the knife.

His work has been rewarded with 5 major prizes :

  • Côte des Arts Prize, Château de Sévigné, 1991.
  • Honorary Award, Château Sévigné, 1991.
  • First Prize of the Nu Marseille, Méditerrannée Gallery, 1991.
  • Critics' Prize, Nice, 1991.
  • Cited in 1992 in the International Directory of Painters and the Semester of Arts.

His art has evolved over the years. From now on, he expresses himself fully in the abstract: « I draw on it to express my my emotions. Corsica succeeds in me, painting is an integral part of me, every minute that passes is to be grasped and paint ».

He paints large canvases inspired by Street Art, uses different techniques, colours that are both tender and strong, and the transition from figurative to abstract gives him the opportunity to claim his full freedom. Avoiding overly strict codes, he prefers to preserve his freedom of expression and his own way of expressing himself.
