Biography

Sergey Akopov was born in 1956 in Tbilisi. In 1983 he graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1993 he lives and works in Moscow. He is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia and the International Association of Arts at UNESCO since 1998. His works can be found in private collections across Europe, the United States, Canada and China.

Sergey Akopov commenced his career leaning towards impressionism, post-impressionism and expressionism, influenced by the abstract and moderate avant-garde genres.

Towards the mid-90s the artist turns to the Flemish and Dutch art of painting and discovers the world of still life. He creates his own style, with gentleness and sensitivity, where the play of light and darkness prevails.

With the arrival of the new millennium, Sergey Akopov felt the need to explore new pictorial forms, allowing him to express his attitude toward human and universal subjects. The little characters present on his urban canvases of the 90s, grew up, until occupying all the canvas. This is how the artist moves towards figurative symbolism.
