Art Basel 2023 Fair Schedule

Primed for Success

Art Basel is Switzerland's most prestigious international contemporary art fair that has yearly events all over the world, from Miami to Paris and Hong Kong. This year it is expected to attract nearly 100,000 visitors this June. This must-see event will allow the public and art critics to take stock of what’s going on in the contemporary art world.

International art lovers and professionals will be able to discover artwork from 300 art galleries from 35 countries, with representatives from every continent, and a total of 4,000 artists exhibiting their latest creations. Gallerists, curators, museum directors, collectors, buyers and art enthusiasts coalesce for this colorful and truly one-of-a-kind event.

An Unforgettable International Event

Art Basel originated in the Swiss city of Basel over 50 years ago in the 1970s under the direction of three Basel-based gallerists - Ernest Beyeler, Trudi Bruckner and Balz Hilt - and is now exported to the world's major cities.

Today, it is a leading showcase for contemporary art. The event has increased in popularity over the years, attracting 60,000 visitors in the 2000s and over 90,000 in recent years.

The annual event held in Switzerland, was soon expanded to include other international versions - Art Basel Miami Beach created in 2002 by Samuel Keller, followed by Art Basel Hong Kong in 2013 and Paris + par Art Basel in 2022.

An Essential Cog in the Contemporary Art World

Art Basel International Contemporary Art Fair is spread out over several halls, each with its own section dedicated to a different form of art. Several galleries, like the “Young Galleries" and "Statements,” showcase work by emerging artists.

Of course, visitors will also have the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the greatest names in contemporary art. The world's most influential and innovative galleries will be present.

Basel Art Fair 2023 Highlights

The list of galleries that will be present at Basel is available on the event's official website. Since it is impossible for us to give an exhaustive list here, we would like to mention some of the galleries that we think are well worth the detour: David Castillo (Miami), Martos Gallery and Thomas Erben Gallery (New York), M77 Gallery (Milan), Jacky Strentz (Frankfurt) and Galerie Bene Taschen (Cologne). Quite a line-up and that's just a small example of this year’s participants!

Latifa Echakhch’s Installation

One of our must-see picks is a sprawling installation situated in the Messeplatz by the artist Latifa Echakhch who was invited by Samuel Leuenberger the curator of the "Parcours" section.

Latifa Echakhch is a French-Moroccan artist born in Morocco in 1974. She lives and works in Vevey and Martigny, Switzerland. Her work has been exhibited in Paris, Los Angeles and London. Driven by a desire to counter certain prejudices, contradictions and stereotypes in our society, she isolates and questions materials that are symbolic for these phenomena. This installation has already been announced as a highlight of the 2023 Art Basel Fair. Echakhch represented Switzerland at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022.
