Period Contemporary (1945-today)

Made from recycled tin cans this sculpture, depicting an oversized luxury Cartier wristwatch, belongs to the series of works entitled Distinguishing marques. This series of artworks condenses a number of sociologically speaking concepts, including an attempt to re-appropriate the stigma of luxury iconography.

There is both a simplicity and playfulness to this artwork. This should not detract however from the intrinsic technical challenges presented in this sculpture. The base materials have been remodelled by hand, shaped rather than cut, and painstakingly painted to replicate the original classic timepiece.

Mounted on a natural wood plinth, the sculpture can be displayed either free-standing or wall mounted.

Artist Biography

Preferring to remain incognito, contemporary artist Norman Gekko swims against the tide of "sharing" on social networks and the egotistical exhibitionism that dominates contemporary art. So, no nationality, no gender. For the artist, the choice of anonymity has only one function: that of allowing works to be contemplated without prejudice, thus giving them the place which is rightfully theirs in society.

Gekko's style is clear and simple: creating, by the trompe-l'oeil technique, on a recurring monochrome background a unique pictorial motif. In their great variety, Gekko's works produce a critical and acerbic discourse on the future of contemporary society. The sculptures, although often seemingly playful, however, are always visually provoking and striking.

Once you have seen a work by Norman Gekko, you cannot confuse it with any other.
